Hello! Are you interested in learning how to navigate the FDA recall website? Here's a little information about it!
As of now, the website is at: https://www.fda.gov/safety/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts
Here's what you'll see when you visit:
Below this, you'll find two things:
- A search feature
- The comprehensive list.
How to interpret the list:
I will use the first item as an example. It says "2/10/2024" and "SaveMart."
Do I frequently by any "SaveMart" food? I don't know. I'm not familiar with that brand. Sometimes smaller, better-known brands are contained under these larger categories. So I will click on it:
Now I can see that "SaveMart" includes something else called "Lucky" and "Lucky California." I also see that this recall is about their "service deli chicken street taco kit" specifically.
Is that all the information I need? I will scroll down to read the Summary.
It's important to note WHY the product is being recalled! Some are "less serious" recalls, such as "oops, we said this product didn't have peanuts, but it might." (I say "less serious" because allergens are less of a health risk for the average person than pathogen contaminants like Listeria, E. coli, etc.) These "less serious" recalls can still indicate poor quality of production, so even if they aren't relevant to you, it's worth being aware of.
However, this recall is Listeria! What is Listeria? Often, the recall page will explain the contaminant and it's dangers. There is often other VERY IMPORTANT information too.
So I will scroll down and skim the next section:
Note, there is a description for Listeria.
But IMPORTANTLY, it notes that the risk comes specifically from cotija cheese from Rizo-Lopez Foods.
At this point, I'm not sure if other products containing this ingredient have issued recalls. Typically, recalls are made voluntarily by the brands/companies that sell the products. However, the FDA can also announce contaminants, if the companies do not volunteer that information. I will return to the main page and continue reading the recent recalls, looking for the Rizo-Lopez cojits cheese as I read about other recalls.
I click on the second one, Stater Bros., and hey! That looks familiar! Is it the same cheese? I scroll down to see:
Yep, same cheese!
And when I scroll down more, I find some very helpful information:
So, the FDA and CDC are investigating the outbreak. It's related to cojita and queso fresco. And, helpfully, there is a link for more information!
When I click the link, it takes me to a page for Rizo-López Foods, Inc, and their voluntary recall of dairy products. Tumblr says I can't add more pictures so here's some information from the page:
The recalled products were distributed nationwide by RLF and through distributors. Products also were sold at retail deli counters including, but not limited to, El Super, Cardenas Market, Northgate Gonzalez, Superior Groceries, El Rancho, Vallarta, Food City, La Michoacana, and Numero Uno Markets.
The recalled products include cheese, yogurt, and sour cream sold under the brand names Tio Francisco, Don Francisco, Rizo Bros, Rio Grande, Food City, El Huache, La Ordena, San Carlos, Campesino, Santa Maria, Dos Ranchitos, Casa Cardenas, and 365 Whole Foods Market.
Note that it discusses some of the places it was sold, and the brands it was sold under! If you have loved ones who buy the products, be a sweetheart and tell them.
At the bottom of this page is a BIG, HELPFUL SECTION OF PHOTOS of some affected products! You can screenshot those to reference at the store, and send the photos to loved ones.
If you are quick, you can scan a whole year's worth of recalls in 10-30 minutes. Then you just need to periodically check back for new ones!
Okay, hope that is helpful for someone! Stay up-to-date and stay safe! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

Haunted Schools
Packing a bunch of teenagers into a small area is not a natural, not to mention rational, practice. The angst of all those concentrated adolescents is apt to promote all manner of psychic manifestations. Considering the nature of the school beast, the fact that many are considered haunted should not surprise anyone.
John J. Houghton was one of Augusta's earliest philanthropists. His will left $4,000 to the Augusta City Council for the purpose of constructing a free school for poor children. Houghton Institute opened in 1851 and served its purpose well for decades. But it was one of 700 structures destroyed by a massive fire in 1916. A new school, Houghton Elementary, opened the same year, and some remains of its namesake were disinterred and buried beneath a tile floor in the school foyer, where a plaque described Houghton's generosity. The new school was a grand place with high ceilings and hardwood floors, and for eighty-four years much of the student body believed it was haunted by its benefactor.
One student said many believed that Mr. Houghton pushed kids down the steps, and this child admitted to racing down the halls in fright. He also said that doors banged loudly, too loudly to be natural, when they closed. One door closing sounded like five. Even Houghton's principal, William Holmes, confessed that when he worked alone on Saturdays, he doubled-checked to be sure that the doors were locked.
A great legend died when the school closed in December 2000. It was combined with another facility, now named Craig-Houghton Elementary School on Fourth Street. So far, the ghost of Mr. Houghton has not appeared in the new building. But perhaps he's only laying low, getting accustomed to his new surroundings.
Hilsman Middle School in Athens was named for Patti Hilsman, Clarke County's first middle school principal. Miss. Hilsman died on August 28, 1964, and the school was dedicated the following year. To honor its namesake, a portrait of her was hung in the school library. She is depicted as a young woman with piercing blue eyes and red hair piled atop he rhead, wearing a white Victorian dress.
Rumors has circulated for years that the years in the portrait moved and followed passing students. However, in late October 1990-yes, just before Halloween-students changing classes were taking a shortcut through the library when someone exclaimed that Miss. Hilsman's eyes moved. Suddenly everyone saw the same thing. Consensus was soon reached that it was her birthday and that she was coming back!
Hysteria swept the school, and many students said that when they walked on the wrong side of the hall, Miss. Hilsman would correct them, saying, "Walk on the right side of the hall." Once on hall duty-always on hall duty.
Darlington High School in Rome has a haunted structure, the Louis K. Customs Dormitory. The story goes that the property was once an amusement park or hair grounds. A little girl became lost there and died of exposure. It's her spirit that haunts the dorm.
One summer a resident teacher was lone in the building when she heard a childish voice singing and the sound of a small girl running through the halls. A check od the form and grounds revealed nothing. One night a student was awakened by a little girl who begged for assistance. Terrified, the student threw pillows at the ghost, the projectiles passing through it and rudenly awakened a roommate.
Lithonia's original school was constructed around 1865 on Stephenson Road near a rock quarry. Although the school has now been converted to a private home, its old ghosts remain. A teenage boy and a brooding hooded figure are said to frequent the entry hall, and an eight-year-old girl has been encountered. The schoolmarm's presence is announced by the rustling of heavily starched dresses.
Newnan's Northgate High School has a pleasingly scented ghost. Legend has the land belonging to a plantation owner who killed a slave one morning at breakfast. The heavenly smells of bacon and eggs are often detected wafting through the halls.
Jordan Vocational High School in Columbus has multiple ghosts The spirit of a teenage girl haunts the auditorium. Apparently, in life she had become overly enthusiastic while watching her boyfriend perform in a play and jumped up to shout his name, only to plunge over a balcony railing to her death. Her ghost now roams the stage and balcony. Encountering that spirit seems preferable to meeting the ghost that haunts the construction room. There is a metal rod pierced the heart of a young man, and he can be seen clutching his chest. Certainly, many of the stories of paranormal activity at schools are generated by the overactive imaginations and mischievous minds of adolescents. But can that really be the explanation for all of these tales of ghostly encounters? Or could it be, just maybe, that there are some Georgia residents whose presence can still be felt among us, even after they have departed our fair state and this life as we know it?

Tuesday 5.. March 1839
7 40
2 ½
cousin came just after breakfast 35 minutes with A- before dressing – finish dullish cold wind-whistling morning F37° inside and 33° outside at 9 a.m. breakfast at 9 20 in ½ hour – read a few pages and made a little note or 2 before breakfast – afterwards with Robert Mann + 2 at the top terrace, and set him to lengthen the temporary flag in front of the house with Robert the joiner ordering about door into Johns’ pantry to 2ft. 8in. broad and 6ft. 3in. high – then had Booth – charged him to see that Mark Hepworth understood that he was bringing the stuff from St. Annes’ street Northgate by the cube yard – the glazier (Firths’ man) here mending windows – putting a new tap on the kitchen pipe and removing the once-intended housemaid closet (little field reservoir) water pipe – to come again on Thursday to fix it in another place – about 11 or afterwards had Messrs. Holt and Garforth – the latter had examined the drum of the steam engine – he said it will not do as it is – it wants the small shaft taking out, and making smaller so as to work easily in its place – and the thread at the end wants to be coarser so as to throw it in and out of geer quicker – G- would do all the above work, being all that is required, in 2 days, supposing the screw to be made which would take one day in making – that is, G- would do the whole in 3 days for the sum of two pounds – asked him how much he thought the engine-business would cost more than it ought to have done – he asked £300 – I turned to Holt and said I laid that to him he ought not to have let it been so – he said, it was somebody elses’ fault (SW.’s) not his (Holts’) – he could not help it – I merely said, if I got off for £300, it was as little as I expected – on talking the matter over I said as G- would answer for setting the drum right in 3 days, I could want that time longer – after waiting – (been delayed) 6 months 3 days longer did not signify much and the Scotch engineer deserved no better from us than to let him fail again – so Holt to leave the drum to its fate, and merely let the Low moor people know to fit up the boiler with the extra piping required so that that might be ready when the cylinder arrived – Holt and Garforth and if possible Mr. Harper to be here to see the engine tried – Holt said he never was in such a place in his life as A-‘s Hinscliffes-pit – a throwdown of 5d. or 15? yards – wondered how they got the coal – ½ acre of Hannah Walkers’ coal to get – would consider a few days about the value of the remainder of the coal A- has to get – unlet – to stick up to the present price £200 to see what Hinscliffe really would give – but he would hardly give (Holt thought) so much as £150 per acre – mentioned to Holt Mark Hepworth having told me on Saturday that Speight of Scholes would come forward to prove that he had helped to get and measure the Hinscliffes’ father and Walsh and co. stole from my uncle – Holt to take Mark Hepworth with him and go over to Speight and inquire into the matter – Thomas Pearson killed one of the pigs this morning – the horses ordered for 2pm. and came about that time – but I was with Robert the joiner in the tower cellar cutting away part of the bottle crate opposite the door, and moving the lead pipe – dressed – off with A- in the carriage to Heath at (near) 3 – about an hour there – went with A- she going there to see Mr. Wilkinson and tell him her wish to give up the Sunday schools’ at midsummer – Mr. Wilkinson not at home – gone to Huddersfield on the surrogate business it being the 1st Tuesday in the month – Miss Wilkinson and Mr. and Mrs. Fenton received us – the latter at the gate, and turned back with us – Miss W- nervous and sorry at A-‘s giving up the schools’ but much obliged and behaved very well seeming very anxious to settle matters to the satisfaction of his fathers’ parishioners – Mr. and Mrs. Fenton, too, very civil etc. etc. but it struck me that he was neither sorry nor surprised at A-‘s giving up – from incidental conversation I should think Mr. F- a supporter at heart of the Oxford Tract men, and .:. not anti Roman Catholic – he maintained that there were no conversions - the Roman Catholics opened their purses to build chapels but the congregations were Irish – no conversion – F- had 300 or 400 in his late parish (Ilkley) never preached against them – no conversions there unless there was a farm to let or something of that kind – (Mr. Middleton the squire there an influential Roman Catholic) – when I mentioned the tract-men, and asked what could be thought of them, F- made no answer – suspicious silence! I am heartily glad A- has at last mustered up resolution to get rid of these schools in creditable time – before any hint, clerical or otherwise, that better management than hers might be attained – from Heath to Mr. Parkers’ – had P- in the carriage – Sunday little business of A-‘s; and I mentioned the Hinscliffe coal-trespass – P- says we must file a bill in chancery – has heard of the Manns’ business with Mr. Freeman – Report says the Manns are worth a thousand pounds – Robert told me this morning Mr. Alexander had had a letter from Mr. Higham purporting that F- would let them off on paying £50 – if not would proceed against them – from Mr. Parkers’ to Whitleys’ – ordered Wilds’ map of Asia minor – then to Nicholsons’ but did not get out of the carriage – home at 5 ½ - Robert had lengthened out the flagging way in front of the house (with old causeway stones) to within 4 or 5 yards of the terrace wall – A- and I walked there till after 6 – then about in the house – dressed – dinner at 7 – A- read French in the dining room – coffee – asleep – read the newspaper till 10 – then wrote all the above of today till now 11 ½ pm finish dullish day – came upstairs at 11 50 at which hour F37 ½° inside and 31° outside – above ½ hour with A- left her at 1 5 – then sewing up a napkin for cousin till two and twenty five minutes

Bankfield and Akroydon (Halifax)
Recently discovering Halifax had two model villages – Copley and Akroydon, we agreed to explore the latter combined with a visit to nearby Bankfield Museum. Riding up front on the top deck of the bus, Phil pretended to be driving and I contemplated starting points for future days out. Disgorged at Crown Street, we walked alongside Broad Street shopping centre to Northgate. Noting a sign for…

In the winter, sleeping in on our birthdays makes our birthdays seem objectively shorter. You leave the house around noon or after, you've got about four hours of birthday in there.
Not really, of course. It just feels like that since we lose the daylight a little after four in the afternoon.
A seriously short day.
Two days after the shortest day of the year, the winter solstice.
So this year we get up when we normally get up for work, somewhere between 7 and 8 with teas, coffee, and a latte. Nine-ten we're out the door and into the theater with a tub 'o buttered popcorn by 930 for a bunch of trailers and, finally, "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes".
We were the only ones there.
We are definitely watching that again.
Friend of ours isn't a fan. A bunch of people aren't fans of the movie. But we were hooked, engaged by the head-game vibe of the story. There are definitely questions littered about like landmines and we want at least another go at watching the movie for understanding.
It feels like there's more there there.
Twelve-thirty we're out of the theater and back to the house to pick up birthday brownies that'll come into play when we're down at Linzy's place. Linzy, by the way, is working her music teacher gig that'll end at two.
Two-twenty we drive up to her place, she arrives a coupla minutes after, grabs the birthday brownies from Kimmer, sets them in her apartment, jumps into the car, and we head off to Tapster for drinks.
It's never just drinks at Tapster, of course. It's an experience.
They've got swings for crying out loud. Which are the "seats" Kimmer 'n Linzy chose once they had their first round of drinks in hand.
By the way, I didn't want to drive into town. Didn't want to deal with parking that I presumed would be impossible. My idea, which remained just an idea, was to park at Northgate and light rail into town. Instead, we picked Linzy up at her place, drove down to that parking lot in front of the Wooden Boats place and BAM.
Found our parking spot first thing.
Three-thirty we hail a Lyft that drops us on the corner of 1st & Pine fifteen minutes later. We start walking down Pine and immediately start thinking this is the exact stretch of sidewalk Tom Hanks and Rob Reiner walked up (or down) in the movie, "Sleepless In Seattle".
Halfway down the block, we're sucked into Sur La Table, the kitchen store. Not sure how long we're in there but we look at a lot of kitchen accessories.
Then we're out the door, down to the corner, across the street passed the guy playing his mini piano on wheels on the opposite corner. Up the block some more and we catch the trail to Pike Place Market Creamery, our first intended stop at the Market.
Why?
'Cause none of us has been able to score eggnog at any of our usual grocery stores. And sure enough, the Creamery has some. In glass bottles, no less.
And definitely tasty.
Next stop's across the street, over by where they throw fish, down the stairs just to the right, down a flight, down a hall, down some stairs, backtrack a little on the next floor down to Golden Age Collectibles, the Sci-Fi store of my youth... the comic book store of our friend Susan's time working at the main branch of the Seattle Public Library.
Magnets, by the way. In a store packed with people browsing a multitude of collectibles, magnets are what caught our eyes and kept catching our eyes.
We couldn't get enough. They were hysterical.
We were there a bit, then after started thinking about dinner so we headed back to the stairs with the intention of walking down to the waterfront. As we're almost to the stairs, though, Kimmer spots a restaurant down an adjacent hall. Sound View Cafe. With, yes. A wonderful view of Eliott Bay, the Sound, and the sunset behind it.
And, of course, the tasty A1 burgers set before us on the table.
Quarter to Six we walk out of the Market, across the street, making our way to Westlake Mall for a more intense Christmastime vibe slash photo op.
Eventually, we make it to Nordstrom and their Ebar Artisan Coffee shop for our evening's hot beverages. Then we're up up up to and across the sky bridge to Pacific Place where we completely disapprove of the remodel. Linzy objects on the basis of the shops are waaaaaaay out of her price range. We object on the basis of it's not as charming as it used to be.
By 'n by, we make our way to the ground floor and pop back out onto Pine, walking toward the Macy's Star. Crossing 6th toward Nordstrom, we join a group of parents and kids watching the going's on inside Nordstrom's Santa Lane.
It really is worth a moment of your time watching Santa and his visitors through the glass. It's also worth a moment of your time watching people watch Santa and his visitors. Including some little people with their noses pressed right up to the glass.
It's addicting to watch the activity both inside and outside the Lane.
Six-thirty we catch a Lyft down the block and to the left. Drops us at our car at South Lake Union. Then we drive up the hill to Linzy's place where, once again, we get excessively lucky with parking. ☺️
Inside Linzy's place, birthday brownies are immediately put to good use, preceded by a touch of candle lighting and a round of "Happy Birthday".
Linzy was pretty full from dinner by that point so it was Kimmer 'n me partaking of the chocolate-y chewy goodness.
Linzy has a friend whose birthday's the same day as mine so she has another party to attend. With that in mind, we hit the road at 730 (hugs and good wishes all around) while she gets ready.
Now, my birthday's not yet over but we are transitioning to our Christmas plans. Therefore, our next stop's at Total Wine & More in Alderwood to build up our holiday stock. Interestingly, we don't seem to be much in need... and wind up walking away with just the one six-pack of Clausthaler Grapefruit Non-alcoholic Beer.
That's okay, though. It's festive!
Eight-thirty we're home packing and wrapping presents.
That's me, by the way. Kimmer, on the other hand, is writing inside the birthday card she crafted for me and also wrapping my birthday presents.
The presents, by the way, include a glass ornament in the shape of an old television set with color bars in the screen, a black t-shirt that reads "It's Not A Dad Bod... It's A Father Figure", and a much better thermos to replace my old one.
So.
My birthday came to a close around 930 that night with the opening of my birthday card and gifts.
Beyond that?
Getting ready for the impending Christmas.
